Reducing the Risk of Endoscope Contamination with Antimicrobial Fiber Endoscope Cleaning Brushes

The twisted wire brush designers and engineers at Sanderson MacLeod continually pursue ways to perfect medical brushes, including anti-microbial endoscope cleaning brushes. Their efforts have resulted in countless improvements and innovations. Rigid Quality Control and adherence to tight customer design tolerances prove to be vital in today’s medical device cleaning environment. Through close collaboration with our customers, we leverage advanced planning, design, engineering, production, and delivery methodologies for all of our brushes. It’s through these collaborative efforts that our brush design innovation and breakthroughs happen.

Sanderson MacLeod works with customers to achieve desired results faster and with more accuracy, often leading to new and exciting features and products. In 2013 Sanderson MacLeod introduced a proprietary method of making stylets for cleaning endoscopes up to 125 centimeters long. To remain cost-competitive, we design and build our own manufacturing equipment, allowing us to offer products that are unparalleled in quality and unlike any other manufacturer.

Why use antimicrobial fibers?

Microbial contamination happens when microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and protozoa are unintentionally introduced to a controlled area, such as the surface of an endoscope. This type of contamination can lead to both health threats and confounded research results. The antimicrobial fibers available in our medical equipment cleaning brushes have antimicrobial agents incorporated into the fibers, this produces a brush that kills or helps prevent the growth of harmful microorganisms. By using anti-microbial fibers, endoscope cleaning brushes may have increased protection from microbial contamination that could present a health risk to the patient. Further, using antimicrobial brushes can help assure that cell samples collected from patients have a reduced risk of contamination and that examination results may be more accurate.

As Mark N. Borsari, President of Sanderson MacLeod recently stated, “the medical industry is being more and more scrutinized in terms of how they’re taking care of their patients, making sure that their equipment is lasting longer. People are realizing that small things such as an [anti-microbial] cleaning brush do have a major impact in the end result of the patient”.

Brush Innovations Made in the USA

Sanderson MacLeod has pioneered the medical brush cleaning and cell sampling brush industry with world class brush designs and flexible prototype development processes. The brush design and development process produces standard brush configurations and also allows for custom designed brushes for specific applications. Each brush is subject to an exacting set of measurements and quality control methodologies all the while being specifically designed for patient safety. For more than 50 years, all of Sanderson MacLeod’s design, manufacturing, and distribution happens in the USA at their plant in Palmer, Massachusetts.
